few nights at casmariñas, hidden from the strong wind + boat rescue

We moved form Porto Corme to Casmariñas a few days ago, the weather isn’t stormy but still quite strong. gust to 32 knots on the forecast and i know that Cabo Finistère is a difficult place to go thought especially with strong wind. So we decided to stop for a few days at anchor in a bay protected from the wind. When we arrived we had 22 knots of wind to anchor. We dragged, we had to pick up the anchor it was full of algae, so not the best place for the anchor to set  but we try again after the second one was a the good one there is 5m of water but cause the gust are quite strong and there is a bit of current from the river we decided to put a little extra anchor chain around 30m, we waited for a bit with the anchor alarm turned on, it’s good the anchor is set. After a little bit of emotions we calm down and open a beer, the anchor is set we are good for now i kept the GPS on to have an eye on it until i’m fully sure that we are not moving.

the next day we have great sun so we decide to go for a trek to faro Vilano the trek is very nice the coast here is very beautiful an the lighthouse is amazing, from here we can feel the strong winds and i feel comfortable that we stay there protected. on the way back we do some groceries and get some gas for the stove.

A few hours later a new boat arrives with loud music in the boat, engine was running quite fast, the captain was standing at the back. Their entrance was a bit like jack sparow in pirates of the Caribbean 😅😅

he lanched the anchor not even facing the wind which supprised me but the wind wasn’t so strong at that time. it look like they are set. later at night after we had a good meal (Pierre made us a financier cake with the leftovers egg white it was amazing) i go out for a cigarette and see the new boat had drifted and was in the rocks about 200 meters away standing on his keel. I saw the 2 other boats were going there with the dingy. we decided to remove the electric engine and put the 9.9 hpas fast as we could, get some ropes, headlight on, to give them a hand. when we arrived there the boat was stuck and the tide was going down for a few more hours more, we couldn’t move it. With all the other boat around discussion started on the best way to free them, 2 guys sailing old classic boats with 30 years of experience at sea were leading the discussion.

I, as a young captain listen carefully, they suggested to attached a new anchor attached to the stern and the back of the boat to stabilized it and wait for the tide to come back up. We got the anchor set in place with a 50m line stabilized the boat and waited. The boat was supposed to be released at around 3 when the tide got a bit up. we had some funny discussions and went back to our boats, we all stayed tunned on channel 10 on the vhf in case they needed help. At arround 4 i here a little message saying that they got free from ground and everything went well. Happy that everything went well and nothing really bad happened, and now it’s just a cool story to share.

the next day we had a beach party with all the boats this was really nice to meet everyone, ear their life stories and have cool tips for our next stops.

once again sailing is full of lessons today we got an other one on how to free up a boat when grounded and i think it will not be the last one.
